The performers comprised four clarinets, two oboes, one trumpet, two horns, two bassoons and one serpent. The trombones and the three black men with their "Turkish music" mentioned by Parke and Pohl were later additions. It was the adoption of the latter which resulted in a complete alteration in the character of military bands, and was the means of giving it a denned position in the realms of music. |
